Arts, Culture and Theatre

Diversity is centre stage when it comes to enjoying arts, culture, theatre and entertainment in Ontario.

As the world’s third largest English speaking theatre centre, Toronto gets top billing for just about everything. Revel in a lavish production at the Royal Alexandra or Princess of Wales Theatres. Take in experimental or the ‘tried and true’ at scores of smaller theatres, including the intimate Soulpepper Theatre Company. Be moved by an aria or a pas de deux at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts or the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, also featuring exciting live entertainment. Laugh until you cry at Yuk Yuk’s – Canada’s premier spot for stand-up comedy. Or see hilarious improvisation at its best at Second City where names like John Candy and Martin Short got their start.

Visit the incomparable National Art Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and hundreds of other galleries throughout the province. Or delve into your special interests at more than 250 museums.

Outside of urban centres, experience classic theatre at the Shaw and Stratford festivals. Catch the Festival of the Sound at the Charles W. Stockey Centre for the Performing Arts in Parry Sound.

After enjoying pleasant scenic drives through rolling farmlands, quaint villages and limitless landscapes, experience the special charm of professional live theatre presented annually at the Blyth Festival, Lighthouse Festival Theatre (Port Dover), Huron Country Playhouse (Grand Bend) and Theatre Collingwood. Look for live theatre at historic opera houses in Orillia and Gravenhurst. And stop by the beautifully renovated 1929 Capitol Theatre in North Bay – a 1000-seat performing and visual arts centre.
