Fishing and Angling

Abounding with more varieties of freshwater fish than anywhere in the world, it’s no wonder anglers are hooked on Ontario. With over 400,000 lakes and rivers, and outfitters who’ll supply you with gear, boats and guides, you’re likely to end up with a fish story you don’t even have to make up.

Test your lures on the deep, clear waters of Muskoka or Georgian Bay – sheltering bass, walleye, pike, lake trout and whitefish. Angle in the shallow, rich waters of the Kawarthas. Troll for the elusive muskellunge on Lake Nipissing. Join a charter on one of our Great Lakes and reel in a rambunctious salmon. Land a prize at fishing derbies throughout the province including North Bay, Rice Lake, Kenora and Fort Frances. Or seek ultimate adventure on a fly-in fishing trip to a remote camp north of Superior or Lake of the Woods where the silence is only broken by the call of the loon, and outfitters will guide you to spots where a good catch is practically assured. Choose from many all-inclusive packages and accommodations that range from housekeeping cabins to luxurious resorts.

In winter, head for the clusters of heated ice fishing huts that spring up on lakes all over Ontario. Bait up in dozens of places including Georgina – the ‘ice fishing capital of Canada’ on Lake Simcoe.

Licenses are required for fishing in Ontario and can be purchased from numerous outlets including sports stores, tourist outfitters, fishing lodges and the Ministry of Natural Resources. For information on licenses and regulations for fishing, visit Let’s Fish Ontario.
